Hardscape contractor in north Charlotte

Charlotte sits on the same Piedmont red clay as the rest of the Lake Norman area, and it behaves the same way: it drains slowly, holds water against anything you bury in it, and heaves a little every time a wet winter meets a hard frost. Our freeze-thaw is mild compared with the northern states, but it is real, and it is why a patio laid on a thin bed of sand looks fine in June and wavy by the third spring.

Every paver patio and walkway we build in north Charlotte goes on a compacted, open-graded aggregate base built to CMHA (Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association) guidance, with geotextile between the clay and the stone where the subgrade is soft. Walls get clean stone and a perforated drain behind every course. None of it shows when we leave, and all of it decides whether the work is still level in fifteen years.

We are based in Davidson, in the north of Mecklenburg County, so Charlotte for us means the neighbourhoods north of uptown: Huntersville, Highland Creek, Prosperity Church, Northlake, University City and out toward Mountain Island Lake. We will travel further south for the right project, but we would rather say that plainly than claim the whole city.

Charlotte has no shortage of contractors, so it is a fair question. A crew that builds on sloped, clay-heavy lakefront lots every week arrives at a flat Highland Creek back yard with more margin than it needs, and that margin is what you are buying.

One contractor, design to build. The company that walks your yard and draws the plan is the same company whose crew digs the base, lays the pavers and stands behind the result. No subcontractor handoff, no gap where a detail gets lost between the drawing and the ground.

Walls built the way engineers want them. Where a wall carries load we build reinforced segmental walls with Geo-Grid laid back into the soil in layers, with clean stone and a perforated drain behind every course. That is how our three-tier lakefront terraces in Mooresville were built, and it is how a 3 ft garden wall in University City gets built too.

A base you will never see. Every paver surface goes on a compacted aggregate base built to CMHA guidance. It is the least glamorous line on the estimate and the one that decides whether the patio is still level when you sell the house.

Locally owned since 2018, insured, and every estimate starts with a free site visit. We work in Techo-Bloc, Belgard and Unilock pavers because their colour ranges and their supply in the Charlotte market are dependable.

Most of the north Charlotte yards we see fall into three shapes. Newer subdivisions in Highland Creek, Prosperity Church and along the Northlake corridor sit on quarter to half acre lots that were graded to drain toward the rear, which often leaves a slope or a drop-off exactly where you want to sit. Townhome and cluster lots near University City give you a small rectangle with neighbours on two sides. Older ranches and split-levels around Mountain Island Lake have bigger, flatter ground and mature trees whose roots have to be respected.

The design approach is the same in each case. Sort the water first: where it comes from, where it goes, and whether the new patio will sit in its path. Then set the rooms, keeping the dining area within a few steps of the kitchen door and the fire pit far enough from the house and the fence to be comfortable. A seat wall along the low side of a graded lot can hold the grade and give you seating in one move, which is usually cheaper than a separate retaining wall and a row of chairs.

Get the invisible work done before the pavers go down: conduit for lighting, a gas stub for a future fire feature, sleeves under the walk for irrigation. Adding those later means lifting finished work.
